Subject: [Int-Law] Update on American law library association's historical vote (AALL's rebranding initiative and proposed name change to the Association for Legal Information (ALI)

Liebe INT-LAW! The vote starts next week. The American Association of Law Libraries<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.aallnet.org_tm_about&d=AwMFAw&c=-dg2m7zWuuDZ0MUcV7Sdqw&r=BAmjehgyBCTPLXTz593dbGXqb9GMDPttBuGRuUQ_6rk&m=L8PqDb8nnvjSkk98AxOQ5btSfSAx_tAZztneQC3VFL8&s=b7uoDnkYmPgC4Kd5NHApr2X5l2EN7DChdDz4m4eM9B4&e=> (AALL) was founded in 1906. If the members vote to change the name to the Association for Legal Information (ALI), it will be the end of a name that has existed for 100 years. So, this is an historical vote. It's not a vote to dissolve like with the Canadian Librarian Association (CLA). Phew! :)

If the vote is YES to AALL becoming ALI, I don't know how the words "law libraries" and "law librarianship" will be handled as part of the rebranding initiative. Will they disappear from brochures, promo, publicity materials?

Anyway, an update on two new public statements (most discussion on the upcoming vote has been in AALL member password-protected areas), but the long threads on the public U.S.-based law-lib list and this Slaw article (tl;dr: Judith is not convinced by the arguments in favor of changing AALL's name to ALI):

There is another post which was kinda disheartening about librarianship, but in the spirit of sharing, a YES vote probably:

Subject: AALL's rebranding initiative and proposed name change to the Association for Legal Information (ALI)

Bonjour la liste! This is not specifically about foreign, comparative, and international law librarianship and legal information profession, but I think will affect our identity and what we call ourselves among ourselves and when talking with patrons/users/stakeholders, so FYI.

The American Association of Law Libraries (AALL) Executive Board has recommended a change of AALL's name to the Association for Legal Information (ALI). AALL members will be voting Jan. 12-Feb. 11 YES or NO to changing AALL's Bylaws to reflect this name change. One sticking point for those who plan to vote NO is that the acronym, ALI, is also the acronym of the American Law Institute (ALI), a well-established association of eminent scholars.

I am posting this not to have a discussion on INT-LAW about it (please do not start one), but as an FYI to our non-U.S./AALL-member colleagues.

MvG,
Lyo ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>).
